3 months after the start of the Nazi war crimes trial –
Of Adolf Eichmann, back in the early 1960’s, Stanley Milgram started a scientific experiment in the basement of Linsly-Chittenden Hall at Yale University. Basically, they would strap subjects to electrified chairs and see if they could get a third party to shock the subject if they were instructed to do so by an “authority” figure.
Now, get this
The shocks would start off small, but uncomfortable, then escalate all the way up to a final, massive shock of 450 volts! Let’s put that in perspective. Your standard household electrical outlet that you plug your computer, lamps, big screen, surround sound system and everything else into runs between 110-120 volts. We’re talking a shock 4Xs stronger than sticking your finger into an electrical outlet!
Sounds totally bizarre, right?
Milgram polled psychology students, colleagues, and a noted honorary Harvard University graduate among others to try to determine their predictions of the outcome of the experiment. Almost unanimously they agreed that only a very small sampling of participants, less than 4%, would be willing to administer such cruel treatment to the test subjects. Well get this. Almost two thirds of the third party participants administered the final 450 volt shock to the test subjects just because someone in authority was giving instructions.
Shocking! (sorry, couldn’t resit)
This was eye opening to me when I heard about the experiment. But when you think about it, it’s completely believable. Everyones lives are so full of things that demand our attention that we’re totally receptive to guidance form someone we’ve assigned the role of authority figure to. If we think someone can help us move in the direction of our goals we’re completely happy to allow them to give us direction and instruction that will help.
Now don’t start strapping your prospects to electrified chairs.
Do however, make sure and understand the benefit to you and your potential client/customer of establishing yourself as an authority. Once you’ve been accepted in that role, they are far more likely to follow your guidance and recommendations. The benefit to them is you’re able to help them achieve their goals much more easily The benefit to you is much lower rejection and resistance.
Adding Value
That’s the best way to establish yourself as an authority. By solving a problem or providing a solution to an issue that is holding your customer/client back you are doing what you have promised to do.
An example is the Shuffle Ap by Elify. Everyone is looking for an edge, a way to stand out from the crowd. When you do that, you’ve solved a problem for them.
