It’s a question that causes a lot of people to stumble.

Do I lead with the products or the business opportunity?
Here’s a hint. It’s a trick question.
Start with the end in mind and ask yourself a couple of simple questions.
What’s your ultimate objective? What kind of business do you want to build? Who are you trying to help? Why are you doing it? Answering those simple questions will help you determine how to conduct your business and how you will relate with others.
There are people on my team who build organizations leading with products and there are leaders who have become successful leading with the opportunity, however, those who have created the largest teams have done neither.
There are limitations to both
The problem with either a product or an opportunity lead is neither fully captures the largest potential audience.
One of the companies that I recommend is in the business of researching, developing, and producing high quality, medicinal plant-based, nutritional supplements. It attracts a lot of health care practitioners. Doctors, Chiropractors, Nurses, Physical Therapists, Certified Nutritionists and their associates. They, by in large, are passionate about helping their clients achieve peak health and fitness. It feels natural for them to lead with the benefits of the products.
By the same token, because this company has a culture of high integrity coupled with a superior compensation plan that offers an excellent entrepreneurial proposition, it attracts a fairly high quotient of opportunity seekers. They get excited and love talking about the potential for creating complete financial freedom and wealth. Leading with the products doesn’t motivate this cohort.
The issue with a product lead is that you are setting yourself up to eventually loose your customers and business partners. There is alway another diet program, energy drink, brain booster, joint comfort product, cellular revitalized, super food or skin cream just around the corner that promises better results with a prettier video to help you sell it.
You see it all the time, affiliates, distributors and associates leave their companies for a different company they perceive to be better in some way.
It’s like my skis, boots, bindings and parka. A while ago I got all new equipment. Top of the line, latest technology, the best I could find and very current. I was so excited the first few times I used it all, but now, just a few years later, there is newer, better, cooler, better fitting, higher performing, more fashionable ski equipment than mine.
The truth is my equipment will serve me very well for years to come, it’s perfectly serviceable, nothing wrong with it at all. I still want new stuff. It’s human nature.
The trap you fall into by leading with the opportunity is, you sound just like everyone else promising a get rich quick plan. You may attract a few here and there, but as soon as they realize hard work and rejection are involved they disappear like fog on a warm day.
People don’t join companies, they join other people
They buy into you, your leadership team and what you are doing together. Everyone has an inner drive to be part of a community, team, tribe, troop, Mastermind. Call it what you will, people want to be part of something significant and meaningful.
If you want to build a really large organization, something big, and lasting, there is only one way to do it. Lead with your team and the vision for what you are creating together.
