Pam Karlen is like many of us “seniors”.  She still has a lot of music left in her.  With a fabulous first home surrounded by 86 of the best golf holes outside of Tucson and a second home in the bucolic North Woods of Wisconsin she and her husband are enjoying the fruits of their professional careers.  Pam and Jerry spend a couple of weeks in the Hawaiian Islands every winter, because they can. Obviously she’s doing just fine financially.

Daniel Pink writes about Purpose.   His book, Drive is all about human motivation.  According to Pink, the confluence of the aging demographic of the Boomer generation and a persons natural shift in focus as we age means 10’s of millions of us are now seeking ways to make a big, lasting, legacy creating contribution to society and the world.

We know from statisticians that demographics is destiny.  Over a decade ago, the oldest-boom’s  began turning sixty. That’s when people usually stop, reflect, and take stock of their lives. And at the beginning of the twenty-first century, anyone who’s healthy enough to have made it six decades is probably healthy enough to hang on a fair bit longer.

When boomers, in the United States and elsewhere, reach this milestone, they usually have another 25 to 30 fairly healthy, active years remaining ahead of them.  Something else hits them like a ton of bricks.

The next two or three decades will fly by fast!

We start asking questions like, “when am I going to be my highest and best self?  What can I do to make a difference?  How can I help to make the world a better place?  Is there a group of other like minded people I can partner with to make a meaningful contribution?”

That is exciting and very good news for the world.  There are almost  80 million Boomers in just the U.S. alone.  That means that every year for the next few decades 4,000,000 more Americans start asking themselves deep, soul searching questions about mortality, significance, meaning and what they really want to spend their precious time doing in the few decades remaining.

And it’s happening all around the developed world.  Boomers are the biggest demographic cohort in Australia, Japan, and New Zealand.

Together we are going to change the world.
