There was a hurricane
Blowing up the Gulf heading right for me. Weather radio had issued an urgent small boat warning. We were working like mad to set out three anchors, hustling all over the 40 foot sloop to lash and stow everything before the storm hit.
Like almost everything in life, it took a lot longer to get the job done than we thought. Buy the time we got the dingy to the dock an evacuation order had already been issued.
But it was too late
We live in Colorado, so the fastest way out of Pensacola, FL, is to fly. We’d have to drive up to Atlanta because it was the closest airport still operating. The roads were clogged, traffic on the highway was crawling and we were almost out of gas. When I pulled into a gas station I was shocked.
The price for gas back then was running at about $1.75 a gallon but since demand was high because of the evacuation warning and the station was right on the side of the highway they were charging $10 per gallon. Almost six times higher than normal and there was a long line of drivers who couldn’t wait to shell out there money to fill up their tanks!
We drove one and a half miles off the highway to a rural station and found gas at the normal price.
I’m seeing the same thing today in a different place
Right now there are over two billion people worldwide using the Internet daily. Obviously it’s the place to be if you’re in any kind of business. If you don’t have an online presence you are rapidly becoming obsolete.
Millions of people are clamoring for training on how to set up an online business and it reminds me of that gas station owner on the side of the highway. People are lining up to pay outrageous prices to “fill up” and get the information they need to set up websites, learn about traffic sources, design effective lead magnets and begin to do biz online.
Don’t get me wrong
I believe there’s a lot of value in paying a price to learn something new. I just don’t believe in being gouged and paying five or ten times too much.
